Still from the documentary The Moscow Trials, that documents the project with the same name by Swiss theatre maker Milo Rau (on the picture: the man with glasses, sitting at the table). The project was a 're-enactment' of the trail against Pussy Riot. Milo Rau (1977) is a theatre director, journalist, essayist, and lecturer and one of the most important European theatre-makers of this time. He's one of the contributors to the Forum in June 2016.

Forum on European Culture launched in Amsterdam

In June 2016, artists and thinkers from all over Europe will come together in Amsterdam for a Forum on European Culture. The run-up has already started.

On 1, 2, and 3 June 2016, artists and thinkers from all over Europe will be coming together in Amsterdam for a Forum on European Culture called ‘Re:Thinking Europe’. The Forum , an initiative of DutchCulture and De Balie, focuses on the strength, influence and value of art and culture for Europe. As a run-up to the Forum in June 2016 in Amsterdam, several programmes will be organised across Europe in the months to come. A website was launched on 20 November.

The Forum aims to answer poignant questions like: What are the cultural values that unite us? How can art and culture offer creative solutions for problems that seem to be splitting us apart? And how can European artists shape the future of Europe? Now more than ever, we must think outside the box of national borders, look at Europe with fresh and creative eyes, and rethink Europe from the point of view of art and culture.

Participants
An impressive line-up of confirmed participants will travel to Amsterdam for debates and key note speeches. Among them are: Rem Koolhaas (architect, the Netherlands), Céline Sciamma (film director, France), Johan Simons (theatre director, the Netherlands), Philipp Blom (historian, Germany), Chantal Mouffe (political scientist, Belgium), Milo Rau (theatre director, Switzerland), György Konrád (writer, Hongary), en Jacques Audiard (film director, France).

Debates, meetings and culture
Over the course of three days, performances, exhibitions and films by trendsetting and visionary artists will demonstrate the richness and diversity of our European culture. Debates, lectures and meetings of experts will give artists, thinkers, politicians and economists the opportunity to explore together the determining role of art and culture as the bedrock of Europe.

As a run-up to the Forum in June 2016, the Forum on European Culture is organising programmes in De Balie and throughout Europe: in Kiev, Warsaw, Athens, Sofia, Vienna.
