Josee Koning sings Calabar with Jazz Sinfônica in São Paulo
Jazz Sinfônica, a symphonic orchestra plus big-band from São Paulo, has invited Dutch singer Josee Koning to participate in a special performance of the musical play "Calabar, praise of betrayal".
"Calabar" was written by Chico Buarque and Ruy Guerra in 1973, and is set during the Dutch invasion of Brazil in 1630. It questions the position of Domingos Fernandes Calabar (1600-1635) who, depending on ones point of view, can bee seen as a a traitor or a hero. Interesting to know is that Chico Buarque wrote "Calabar" during the dictatorial military regime. He questioned the story of Calabar who, according to official history books, was one of the greatest traitors ever in Brazil. "Calabar" was twice banned by the censorship of the military regime, but was admired by the public. Songs like "Tatuagem", "Barbara", "Ana de Amsterdam" and "Fado Tropical" became immense hits.
Now, artistic Director João Mauricio Galindo of Jazz Sinfônica decided to play "Calabar" again, in honor of Chico Buarque. Josee Koning sings the beautiful songs, while Brazilian actor Odilon Wagner tells the story of Calabar. In every way a true Brazilian-Dutch exchange.
