Archives, libraries and historical collections shape our conception of the past
In May DutchCulture organized Unlearning Knowledge Institutions, sharing the stage with makers from the design, performing and visual arts to discuss their approach to working with knowledge institutions – together with the Zuid-Afrika Huis. On one of the warmest days of May, we took the time to listen, pause and reflect on questions around the position of the artist in the institution and how those mechanism work between the Netherlands and South Africa.

Archives, libraries, and historical collections have been instrumental in the construction of knowledge in the colonial paradigm. In recent years, artists and makers have intervened in these knowledge systems. They formulate approaches to read the colonial archive against the grain or perform on commemorative sites to invite multivocal readings of the past. In this event, DutchCulture and the Zuid-Afrika Huis invite several artists to share their interventions in knowledge institutions between the Netherlands, South Africa and other contexts.
