Report - Notes from the Underground

On October 15 Russian and Dutch experts took the stage in De Balie Amsterdam to debate about the alternative voices in contemporary Russia.

In Notes from the Underground, the first edition in a series of four special Russia Reports, they discussed current developments in the Russian creative industries and journalism.

Aided by private capital, cultural and journalistic havens have emerged on the internet where writers, bloggers and artists can express their opinions freely. Several online platforms illustrate how these alternative voices in Russia are flourishing and find their way to a growing audience. “Revolution of the mind is more essential than standing on the barricades.”

Speakers:
Literary critic and cultural historian Irina Prokhorova; author, poet and journalist Linor Goralik; professor of Literature and chair of the Slavonic Department at the University of Amsterdam Ellen Rutten and correspondent Floris Akkerman.
