Project in the Spotlight: Dutch group settlement in Brazil
The National Archives of the Netherlands has commissioned the New Holland Foundation to collect information from (Dutch) archival institutions on Dutch group settlements in Brazil. With the indexing of archives on Dutch group migration to Brazil, they hope to stimulate interest in the subject and to improve the accessibility of the archives. The results of this research are available now (in Dutch).
One of the main purposes of the MCH policy is to better the accessibility of international valued Dutch archives. Apart from the index, historian Lodewijk Hulsman in collaboration with Dr. Mari Smits has published an interesting study on this topic, called Dutch Group Settlement in Brazil 1822-1992. The report is available in English and in Dutch.
The index as well as Hulsman’s report are tools for further research on this theme. The information can be interesting for Dutch communities in Brazil, researchers of migration, migrants and their relatives and other people interested in the Dutch history of Brazil.
Prior to this, the National Archives published a documentary about the Dutch colony Holanda to inform the general public about Dutch group settlement in Brazil.
