Samsun is a city with a population of over 1 million. The Ondokuz Mayıs University (19 May University) was founded in 1975 and is one of the largest Universities in Turkey. Apart from a state conservatory there are no art related departments.

In the STGM database a total of 173 NGO’s was listed of which 13 were dedicated to education and youth, 24 to culture and 1 to arts.

-          Samsun has a Kultur Sarayi (Palace of Culture) were concerts and other performances are held.

-          Samsun has a new opera.

-          Every year in July, Samsun hosts the International Folkdance Festival
