Brazil night in Rijksmuseum

From 1636 to 1644 Johan Maurits was the governor of Dutch Brazil. Frans Post was one of the artists commissioned by Maurits who worked in Brazil. Post painted the exotic flora and fauna of the South American country. As part of the Brasil Festival, the Rijksmuseum exhibits the work of Frans Post and contemporaries. One of the highlights during this presentation is a unique parchment representation of the Brazilian palace Vrijburg, the residence Maurits built during his years in the Brazilian city Mauritsstad (named after himself). Curator Evelyn Sint Nicolaas will tell about the history and background of this special parchment history. But first Martine Gosselink, head of the History Museum, will discuss the interesting period of the Dutch in Brazil during the second quarter of the 17th century.
