Culture Talk: Indonesian architect Setiadi Sopandi on Friedrich Silaban
In his Culture Talk, Setiadi Sopandi will briefly elaborate the career of Friedrich Silaban, probably the most illustrious modern Indonesian architect, whose career spanned along the late colonial period, peaked during early independence era until the late 1970s. This includes exploring Silaban’s most known works – the Istiqlal Mosque, the un-built National Monument, and the Bank Indonesia building – and his involvements in many urban architectural developments in Jakarta, through his close relationship with Soekarno, Indonesia’s first president.
Setiadi Sopandi is a professional architect, lecturer, and architectural historian. He is born, raised, living, and practicing architecture in Bogor, West Java, Indonesia, but frequently teaches in Universitas Pelita Harapan in Karawaci. Between his routine designing architecture, Setiadi is actively involved in research, archiving, and writing things about architecture, especially on architects and architectural works in the 20th century Indonesia. Setiadi is the author of “Friedrich Silaban” (Gramedia, 2017), an extended biography of the most prominent Indonesian modern architect in the early independent Indonesia. Apart from writing, he curated (and researched) several exhibitions, such as the Indonesia Pavilion in the Venice Architecture Biennale 2014, “Tropicality: Revisited” in Deutsches Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt (2015), and the “Friedrich Silaban, 1912-1984” exhibition in National Gallery of Indonesia, 2017.
This event is made possible by Residensi Penulis Indonesia, Komite Buku Nasional Indonesia and DutchCulture.
