On Monday the 23 January it is Chinese New Year, the start of the Year of the Dragon. In China the dragon is a sign of the emperor and this mythical animal brings happiness and prosperity.

To mark this special year, Gemaal op Zuid presents Double Happiness, an overview exhibition with projects of Chinese-Dutch artists of China op de Kaap and Chinees Meisje.

The opening takes place on Friday the 20 January and everybody is welcome. Actor Aaron Wan will open the exhibition and will give a special performance. Hans Walgenbach, managing director of Museum Rotterdam will receive the ‘Vaderlandse Schat’. To chase away all the evil spirits and to welcome all the prosperity for the new year, we ask our audience to take their own pots from home to join us in producing an earsplitting and ‘clean’ version of Chinese fireworks. After the show the pots can be filled with free fried noodles or rice!

In the exhibition room the audience can enjoy a selection of five projects of China op de Kaap, that was organized last year in the context of ‘100 years of Chinese people in the Netherlands’. Visit ‘De Chinese Moestuin’(The Chinese vegetable garden). Listen to personal stories in ‘Cooking up stories’ with the ‘Vaderlandse Schat’, which exists of 300 pieces crockery re-designed by Erika Blikman and Pao Choi. Check the recipes of ‘Boodschappentassenruil’ (Swap of Shopping Bags), visit the dark room with the photo exhibition ‘Afscheidsfoto’ (Farewell photos) or get introduced to all different kind of Chinese spices at De Chinese Muur (The Chinese Wall), made of real Dutch bread. For the styling of the exhibition China op de Kaap worked together with interior designer Dada Wang.

In the Orangerie of the Gemaal op Zuid people can visit the photo exhibition of Chinees Meisje (Chinese Girl), The Hu Family by Fenmei Hu, Linda Malherbe and Joop Reijngoud.

The exhibition Double Happiness is open until Saturday the 3rd of March, in Gemaal op Zuid. Free admittance.
