Living Dance Studio – RED
2015 marked the 50th anniversary of the Red Detachment of Women, a politically-themed ballet that tells the story of a girl who escapes her capitalist oppressor to join a group of female communist fighters. Choreographer Wen Hui (1960), the founder of the first independent contemporary dance company in China, Living Dance Studio, seized this opportunity to document and question the world behind political ballet. Wen Hui’s performance ‘Red’ explores the meaning of the body in the social-political context of the Cultural Revolution and addresses gender issues in Chinese society. Wen Hui created a multidisciplinary performance, by using dance, film and text.
