Paper Tiger Theatre Studio (BJ) to Perform in the Netherlands
Alongside the traditional theatre, which is tolerated by the State, China has a steadily growing circuit of independent, alternative groups. One of the most well-known of these is Paper Tiger Studio from Beijing. With their energetic, often humorous productions, they break through the theatre’s fourth wall and go looking to link up with life in today’s China. In Reading, five dancers declaim texts that were never, ever intended to be performed on stage: excerpts from the register of births, dead and marriages; articles of laws; linguistics essays or a manual for pregnant women. This results in comical, intriguing clashes between movement and text. The theatre opens its doors wide and asks everyday reality to dance.
‘Movement and text flow together […] The constant movement of the bodies constitutes an attack on language – the effect works incredibly well.’ – documentary maker Wu Wenguang
