China is not only in the economic field an emerging world power. Shanghai is one of the fastest growing cities in the world and at the same time, has a world-class symphony orchestra: the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. It is the oldest orchestra in the whole Asia. In 2014, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra will welcomes her 135 years' anniversary.

The SSO is one of the first 'western styled' Chinese orchestras that tour through Europe. Now, for the first time, it is arriving in the Netherlands.


Violinist Ray Chen

At the invitation of chief conductor Long Yu, young rising star Ray Chen joins the band on this tour. The Australian-Taiwanese violinist won the first prize at the prestigious Queen Elisabeth contest in 2009. Chen brings the Violin Concerto by Tchaikovsky. Furthermore, paintings of Mussorgsky will be exhibited and the work by Chinese composer Hua is also on the program.
