Smart Talk: China’s Hidden Histories
Wednesday, 1 february, 21:00
Location: Rotterdamse Schouwburg – de Kleine Zaal
On Wednesday night, during the debate China’s Hidden Histories we pay attention to critical Chinese documentaries. With Bas Heijne as moderator, we reflect on the Signals: Hidden Histories program in which the hidden aspects of Chinese society are discussed. Film excerpts from documentaries by Ai Weiwei and Xu Tong will start the discussion about the importance of Chinese cinema vérité, the power of the Chinese Film Bureau and film activism. How is censorship of visual culture implemented and enforced? What range is left for the Chinese film makers in the filmlandscape? And what do these films tell us about the fringes of Chinese society? With independent film producer Zhu Rikun and sinologist Anne Sytske Keijser.
