Bonaire Museum (Museo Boneriano)is located just outside of the town in the suburb Sabana and is housed in a beautifully restored 19th century plantation house Bonairian and has a fine collection of a large number of archaeological finds (a 760 year old skeleton, old urns and utensils of the Indians). Furthermore, there are antique furniture, household items, agricultural, marine navigation equipment, musical instruments, cannonballs, antique firearms and an impressive collection of shells. The small museum contains historical black and white photos and recent color photographs of the Caribbean island. The walls are decorated with paintings by contemporary artists Bonaire. The Museum Bonaire is a public museum and opened its doors officially in 1988. The house where the museum is housed was formerly the residence of the Herrera family and was called the 'Van der Ree house'. The Herrera family has played an important role in the creation of the Washington Slagbaai National Park.
