The Ditsong National Museum of Natural History, is situated in Pretoria, on Paul Kruger Street and was formerly known as the Transvaal Museum or the National Flagship Institution. The museum houses a diverse collection of invertebrates, mammals, reptiles and birds as well as the best specimen of an Australopithecus africanus skull, affectionately named Mrs Ples. The museum was originally founded in 1895 as the “Staatsmuseum” which is the Afrikaans translation for State Museum.
