The Kern Institute was founded in 1925 and named after the first to hold a chair in Sanskrit, Hendrik Kern. The Institute is the expert centre on South Asia in the Netherlands. This includes the India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the Maldives
