Music venues

Until the end of the 1990’s, Beijing’s rock music scene was essentially concentrated in the student district of Haidian. Chinese and foreign students gravitated to places such as Wudaokou, the Foreign Languages Institute, and Qinghua University’s south gate which became the cradle of different modes of self-expression and a counter culture.Club 13 is a heavy metal venue and Club D-22 is a bar and music club supporting talented young musicians and artists in Beijing, as well as inviting leading experimental musicians from the US, Japan, Europe and elsewhere. Michael Pettis, one of the owners of D-22, has invested in a record label called Maybe Mars signing up top Chinese acts such as Carsick Cars, Joyside and Snapline and plans to open a store just off Nanluoguxiang in Beijing’s Drum Tower area.
