China op de Kaap Book in Making
China op de Kaap is an artistic study about the feeling of home among the Chinese community in the Netherlands of visual artist and photographer Erika Blikman, designer Yuen Han Lam and graphic designer Pao Choi.
The last three years they have studied the feeling of home among the Chinese community.
Together with Chinese and Dutch participants they have organized several subprojects, e.g. Afscheidsfoto, Chinese Moestuin, Boodschappentassenruil of Cooking up Stories. The stories and experiences of the participants of these subprojects were the source of inspiration for Blikman, Lam and Choi to create different artistic works, for example a photo series, a performance or an interactive art installation.
The book is a collection of these community art projects of China op de Kaap; showing the whole process of the study unto the artistic results. Above all Blikman, Lam and Choi want to contribute to the identity of the Chinese community in the Netherlands in a positive way. They want to take away misconceptions and stereotyping by showing people a different perspective on the Chinese community. The recent commotion that arose in the media after the remarks of Dutch TV presenter Gordon in TV program Holland got Talent shows us that this is still a current topic and that people need to learn more and understand more about different cultures.
