It's 1975, one year before the end of the Cultural Revolution. 11year old Wang Han lives in a small provincial town in the south of China, together with his father, mother and sister. His father, an actor himself, encourages him to take up painting, so that he may live a 'free life'. His strict mother only worries about the finances. At school Wang has 3 friends, tall Weijun, Fat Luis and little Mouse. All three are madly in love with their beautiful classmate Xie Juehong.
One day Wang Han is asked to lead the daily gym classes at school. For this he needs an expensive white shirt. His mother begrudgingly uses their valuable clothing coupons. When one day Wang Han is washing the shirt, it is stolen by a murderer on the run. At the same time scared and fascinated, Wang Han and his friends promise not to betray him...
