Design as catalyst for sustainable urban development and social change
The City of Amsterdam is proud to be Guest City of the Beijing Design Week 2013. Although the difference in size between the two cities is evident, many challenges are the same. Which solutions can design provide for issues relating to sustainability, mobility, health and urban planning, fields in which the two cities want to connect. The focus of Amsterdam Guest City will be on design as a catalyst for social change and urban development.
During the Beijing Design Week Amsterdam will present an overview of the most enticing, innovative, sustainable and beautiful solutions that Dutch designers and architects have come up with to address the challenges of living in dendely populated cities. Food for thought will be presented as well as the best designs. From the most famous urban planning project of Amsterdam: the canals, during the 17th Century, to contemporary icons such as Droog Design, Moooi and Marcel Wanders. Showing that a challenge can create an opportunity and a unique signature.
I Amsterdam We Beijing will be presented during the Salone del Mobile in Milan reflecting on some of the projects that have already been established in cooperation between Beijing and Amsterdam designers. Furthermore, Amsterdam will offer a sneak peak of the essence of Dutch design and architecture.
