Kosmopolis - Museu da Maré

Central de Cultura is supporting a project between the Dutch cultural organization Kosmopolis and the Rio de Janeiro based Museu da Maré. In this museum, objects are donated, borrowed, collected from the streets or bought by an informal and active community of practice made-up professionals, museum staff, neighbors and friends of the museum.  The museum also started a new approach, in which donors participate in the documentation procedures of their own objects.

This project is an exchange in which the methods in Europe and Brazil are being analyzed. What is the experience in Europe with participatory collecting? Is there a difference in approach and/or result at traditional European institutes and this favela museum? How do the Dutch museums can be compared to the way Museu da Maré works? What can we learn from each other? These questions are being raised and answered in this project.
