Press Release CD Fulvia di Domenico

Fulvia di Domenico was born in Rome, Italy, but was raised around the world. Together with her family, she was living in Libya, Cameroun, Algeria and Paris before she returned to Rome at the age of 13. In Africa she became familiar with it’s traditional music, French chançons, Italian folk music and Opera...at the age of 6 she was duetting parts of “Rigoletto” with her brother Giovanni…

Fulvia’s musical influences are a combination of her Italian roots and of the different cultures in which she grew up. She not only is a “Roman” abroad but a Citizen of the world. Fulvia studied Spanish and French language and literature at the University of Roma and Granada, while developing her passion for singing. In Rome she studied jazz at the S. Louis Music School and with Italian Jazz singer Maria Pia de Vito. In 2002 she flew to The Netherlands to study “Jazz and Word-Music vocals” at the Rotterdam’s Conservatory, from where she graduated in 2006. During her study Fulvia discovered Brazil, the country and it’s music, and it was love at first sight! Since 2003 she has been exploring and sharing with her public this colorful musical world. Fulvia has been performing in The Netherlands, Italy, Belgium and Brasil as main working grounds, with international musicians of the Jazz and World music scene. Her music is a colorful blend of rhythms, languages and music styles from her experience around the globe.

In 2003, together with percussion player Matthias Haffner and guitarist Marijn van der Linden, Fulvia di Domenico founded the band FULVIA. Since that time the trio works together with different line-ups and instrumentalists with whom they share their passion for Brazilian music. In this way they succeeded in creating the unique sound of the Band. FULVIA brings you an eclectic repertoire made of refreshing arrangements of danceable Sambas, Italian and French Chansons and original compositions, all combined with a jazzy touch and a taste of ‘Dolce Vita’.

FULVIA’s debut album “La Ballata Dei Piedi Volanti” (The flying feet ballad) is the result of this collaboration. It consists of a mix of original compositions of the band members and of their arrangements of Italian and French songs of the 60’s and 70’s. The repertoire  explores Brazilian rhythms like Baião, Samba and Bossa Nova, with Italian, French, Portuguese and English lyrics and jazz improvisations. The result of this mixture is a beautiful own style that could be described as “Italian Bossa Jazz” - Brazilian beats with a twist of jazz and Dolce Vita.

The CD was presented during a wonderful live concert at Rotterdam’s club ‘Grounds’ on the 5th of May 2011. It is released under the Dutch label ‘Distributionlabel’.  The album was recorded and mixed by Sven Lens at the “As Loud As’ studio and mastered at ‘Amsterdam Mastering Studio’ by Darius van Hefteren. The title song “La ballata dei piedi volanti” is an original composition by Fulvia’s brother, jazz pianist Giovanni di Domenico, who is also featured as guest artist on the recording.

Liner notes by Lilian Vieira:

Music is feeling, but you can't always explain feelings... fortunately!

The first time I heard Fulvia's voice she was singing an old beautiful samba in a quite traditional setting. Her extraordinary, clear, tender and beautiful sound made me feel as if with an embrace I was thrown back into ancient Brazil, where so many different cultures passed by to enrich and embellish our music even more.

Fulvia sang that samba as if nobody had ever sang it before, as if it was made just for her.

Through her voice she brought Italy to Brazil, but actually she gave herself

to the world, playing with different styles, like a kid playing with life...and suddenly, feeling became sound...

“…a convincing debut…” (Jazzism September 2011)
