Research information on Dutch group settlement in Brazil

The National Archives of the Netherlands commissioned the New Holland Foundation to collect research information in Dutch archival institutions on Dutch group settlements in Brazil from the 19th century onwards. As a result, the index of archives and documents on Dutch group migration to Brazil is now available in Dutch. With the index the National Archives hopes to stimulate interest in and research into this subject.

Apart from the index, the researcher, historian Lodewijk Hulsman, has published an interesting study on the topic, called Dutch Group Settlement in Brazil 1822-1992. The report is available in English and in Dutch.

The index/research guide as well as Hulsman’s report are tools for further research on the theme. The information can be interesting for Dutch communities in Brazil, researchers of migration, migrants and their relatives and other people interested in the Dutch history of Brazil.

Prior to this, the National Archives published a documentary about the Dutch colony Holanda to inform the general public about Dutch group settlement in Brazil.
