Despite the somewhat less revolutionary present times, these two lines – modern dance and avant-garde – are still evident as the two pillars supporting a richly varied landscape of dance companies, choreographers, freelance choreographers, festivals, production centres and internationally renowned (contemporary) dance courses. In particular, within the festival world (Springdance, CaDance Festival, Something Raw) producers are flourishing who, following the example of the avant-garde, are examining the concepts behind contemporary dance. At the same time, other and larger festivals, such as Holland Dance Festival, Julidans and the Holland Festival bridge the gap between the national and international line-up.

The number of producers who appear to operate effortlessly within an international network, such as Emio Greco | PC, Anouk van Dijk, Nanine Linning and André Gingras is striking. And equally striking is the number of choreographers who draw inspiration from existing choreographies from the history of Dutch dance. History is unravelled, covers are made and reconstructions discussed.
