More information on the 2027 selection process for the European Heritage Label

Are you working at a heritage institution in the Kingdom of the Netherlands that played a major role in European culture and history or the build-up of the Union? Does your heritage institution align with the European values? Would you like European recognition for your heritage and become part of a network of over 67 European partners? Then you might want to apply for the European Heritage Label.

The European Heritage Label is an initiative of the European Commission. Since 2013, every two years new sites can apply for the label. The first step is the national pre-selection, the second step is the European selection. The deadline for the next national pre-selection for the Kingdom of the Netherlands is 1 October 2026.

In this webinar, national coordinator for the European Heritage Label Ben de Vries and DutchCulture advisor Jacomine Hendrikse tell you more about the label and the application.

Who can apply?

The European Heritage Label is awarded to heritage sites who have symbolic value. A site encompasses monuments, natural sites, cultural landscapes, places of remembrance, cultural goods, objects, intangible heritage associated with a place, including contemporary heritage.

In the Kingdom of the Netherlands, there are 5 European Heritage Label sites: Camp Westerbork, the Peace Palace, Our Lord in the Attic Museum, the Colonies of Benevolence and the Treaty of Maastricht.

The European Heritage Label is specifically directed towards youth. Holding the label, sites are expected to promote their European dimension, improve their accessibility for European citizens, for example by increasing multilingualism.
