Amarte Fund: Literature - Development grant
The Amarte Foundation was founded in 2019 by a number of families that share a deep love for the arts. Together they decided to offer financial means to innovative artists and support projects in music, theatre, film, visual arts, and literature. Amarte would like to serve as a springboard for artists, which is why they offer both development grants and project grants to realize relatively small scale projects.
The Literature Development grant is intended for experimentation and exploring new directions. The grant can be used, for example, for a research period to experiment with new literary forms or genres.
Amarte doensn’t only offer support with financial means, but also with expertise or coaching for the development of a project. If an application is granted, Amarte offers an extra sum on top of the financial grant for a collaboration with an expert.
- Professionals in the field of literature, theatre, film, music, visual arts, or a combination of these disciplines, based in the Netherlands or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom, who want to take a new direction and could use a helping hand. Amarte particularly intends to be there for makers who are often deemed ineligible at other cultural funds;
- Creatives who work in Dutch language and who have started writing a first, second or third book;
- Cultural organisations (like publishers) can only submit an application in cooperation with and on the initiative of an artist/maker for the development of one literary publication project.
- Lessons or courses can only be supported if these are embedded in the project, for example, focused on the book the applicant is writing about.;
- Material costs can ony be supported when these stem directly from the project applied for.
Amarte does not support:
- Educational books or cookbooks;
- Anthologies or collections of previously published work;
- Study projects and/or scholarships;
- Projects that are entirely educational in nature;
- Ongoing organisational costs and general investments;
- Costs for residencies.
A maximum of €2,750
Amarte offers grantees an extra sum on top of the financial grant for a collaboration with an expert.
- The development period has a clear beginning and an end;
- The project is at the beginning stage of a creative process (projects that are already at an advanced stage therefore have less chance);
- Only for Dutch-language literary projects;
- A letter of intent from a publisher.
Applications will be reviewed by the advisory committee Theatre. The most important factors they pay attention to are:
- Enthusiasm and urgency
- Artistic quality, boldness, and originality
- Talent development
- The narrative/literary quality of your work.
- A well-thought-out plan.
Please note: Applicants cannot apply for multiple projects at the same time. If an application is still pending, it must be completed before submitting a new application. This also means that it is not possible to apply for both a development and a project grant for the same project. However, after completing a development project, one can apply for a project contribution for that same project.
