Netherlands Film Fund & National Film and Video Foundation: Thuthuka
Thuthuka is an initiative of the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) and the Netherlands Film Fund (NFF) to promote cooperation between South Africa and the Netherlands.
Through Thuthuka, it is possible to apply for a development grant for writing a script and creating a pitch book for a feature film, feature-length documentary, or animated film aimed at theatrical release that will be produced as a co-production.
Annually, a development grant is awarded to a maximum of 4 projects: 2 to majority Dutch film productions and 2 to majority South African film productions.
Eligible applicants are production companies (legal entities, not sole proprietorships or general partnerships) that have been established for at least two years in the Netherlands, an EU member state, the EEA, or Switzerland, and continuously produce and exploit films and other audiovisual productions.
The production company must be represented by a producer who has been primarily responsible as the majority producer for realizing at least one feature film, feature-length documentary, or animated film within the same category as the application, with a theatrical release in the Netherlands.
Up to €40,000
Film plans should contribute to the creative collaboration between the Netherlands and South Africa.
Additionally, the following conditions must be met to be eligible for a contribution:
- The film plan involves a script for a feature-length documentary (> 60 minutes) or (animated) feature film (> 80 minutes) by a South African or Dutch writer;
- The creative partnership between the Netherlands and South Africa must be central;
- A screenwriter and a co-producer from the other country must be committed to the film plan with a written agreement;
- The film plan must be new and not previously submitted for (development) funding to the NFVF or the NFF;
- None of the core team members (producer, co-producer, writer, director) should be involved in a project selected for Thuthuka in the past two year;
- The film production must be primarily aimed at theatrical release. Based on the content, it will be assessed whether the project can attract an audience in both countries.
