NWO: Open Call Research into Collections with a Colonial Context
De NWO (Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek) is the Dutch Research Council. It is the most important science funding bodies in the Netherlands and realises quality and innovation in science. NWO falls under the responsibility of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.
In the Netherlands there are many questions surrounding objects and collections from a colonial context, including how they should be handled, their significance in their historical contexts and in modern-day changing societies, and questions about their repatriation to their country of origin. Research on such objects and collections requires specific expertise from and intensive collaboration with countries of origin, as this is essential to achieving true understanding of the collections and more equitable discussions.
Therefore, this call aims to stimulate knowledge development, knowledge exchange and cooperation between researchers from countries of origin into museum collections and objects in the Netherlands with a colonial context, and researchers and museums in the Netherlands.
NWO offers two different grants:
- Exchange grant:
The maximum duration of the proposed research is twelve months. - Consortium grant
The maximum duration of the proposed research is 60 months.
This is the second round within this research programme.
Researchers from organisations in countries of origin (including the autonomous countries in Kingdom of the Netherlands and the special municipalities) of objects and collections with a colonial context in Dutch museums may apply for a short-term research exchange grant or a larger consortium grant to create a sustainable research network.
Exchange grant: researchers from organisations in countries or regions of origin of collections may submit an application if they have a paid position for the duration of the requested research at a public university or other public research organisation; and have at least a Master’s degree or comparable qualification
Consortium grant: full, associate or assistant professor, or other researcher with a comparable position and a PhD, with a tenured position (and therefore a paid position for an indefinite period) or a tenure track agreement at a university or a research organisation in a country of origin. The university or research organisation must meet the following cumulative criteria:
- is a public institute and carries out its research independently;
- receives at least 50 percent public funding;
- is not-for-profit other than for the purpose of carrying out further research;
- its researchers enjoy freedom of publication in international scientific journals
Fot the consortium grant funds can be requested for personnel, such as PhD students, postdocs and non-scientific staff, research leave, material costs, knowledge utilisation, investments and internationalisation.
Exchange grant: a maximum of €35,000.
Consortium grant: a maximum of €350,000
Applications will be assessed based on the following criteria:
- Quality of the research proposal
- Quality of the consortium
- Societal impact
More information about the criteria can be found in the call for proposals.
