DutchCulture Database en de internationale culturele activiteiten van Limburgse makers

Onlangs analyseerde Bureau Lahaut met behulp van onze DutchCulture Database de internationale culturele projecten en activiteiten uit 2023 van Limburgse kunstenaars. Die gegevens maakten het mogelijk om het internationale culturele klimaat van Limburg en de impact van Limburgse makers in kaart te brengen.

Door deel te nemen aan culturele activiteiten in het buitenland vergroten kunstenaars niet alleen hun zichtbaarheid, maar breiden zij ook hun professionele netwerken uit, wat leidt tot nieuwe samenwerkingsmogelijkheden. Deze ontwikkelingen dragen bij aan de verspreiding van Limburgse kunst en ideeën wereldwijd, terwijl de kunstenaars zelf inspiratie opdoen uit andere culturen. Hun internationale aanwezigheid versterkt bovendien de reputatie van Limburg als een provincie met een levendige en diverse kunstscene.

Limburg staat in onze database op de zesde plaats van Nederlandse provincies met de meeste internationaal actieve makers, waarbij Duitsland de populairste bestemming is. Opvallend is dat bijna driekwart van de buitenlandse culturele activiteiten van Limburgse makers bestaat uit muziekoptredens, waarbij de helft van deze optredens in de genres rock, indie, en metal plaatsvindt.

Met 55 optredens in 25 verschillende landen is de symfonische metalband Epica de internationaal actiefste Limburgse band. Ook André Rieu blijft een belangrijke vertegenwoordiger van Limburgse cultuur, met 59 concerten in het buitenland, voornamelijk in Europa. Wil Salden, bekend van zijn werk met het Glenn Miller Orchestra, overtrof Rieu echter met 65 internationale concerten.

Limburgse filmmakers en beeldende kunstenaars doen het ook goed. Filmmaker Luca Meisters had 21 vertoningen van haar korte film Magma, vooral in Duitsland, die lovende kritieken op het Berlinale Film Festival kreeg en veel internationale prijzen won.

Beeldende kunstenaars hadden diverse groepstentoonstellingen, zo had Jessica den Hartog een expositie in het Musée d’Art Moderne in Parijs, waar haar kunstwerken van gerecycled plastic veel aandacht trokken. Eleni Kamma exposeerde haar werk Casting Call in Kunsthal Gent, Melanie Bonajo’s When the body says Yes+ was in onder meer Tallinn, Antwerpen en Berlijn te zien en het werk van Rineke Dijkstra in zowel Parijs als New York.

Deze cijfers benadrukken niet alleen het succes, maar ook de veelzijdigheid van Limburgse artiesten op het internationale podium. Verdere vergelijkingen met andere provincies en onderzoeken naar de succesfactoren kunnen waardevolle inzichten bieden in het culturele klimaat van Limburg.

Many Limburg artists and creators achieve success at the international level, as shown by research from Bureau Lahaut using our DutchCulture Database. These data provided the possibility to describe the international cultural climate of Limburg in 2023 and thus outline the impact of Limburg creators.

By participating in cultural activities abroad, artists increase their visibility and expand their professional networks, leading to new collaboration opportunities. These developments contribute to the dissemination of Limburg art and ideas worldwide, while the artists draw inspiration from other cultures. Their international presence also enhances Limburg's reputation as a province with a vibrant and diverse art scene.

Limburg ranks sixth in our database among Dutch provinces with the most internationally active creators, with Germany being the most popular destination. Notably, nearly three-quarters of the foreign cultural activities of Limburg creators consist of music performances, with half of these performances occurring in the genres of rock, indie, and metal.

With 55 performances in 25 different countries, the symphonic metal band Epica is Limburg's most internationally active band.
