Art in Times of Corona: listen to the 2018 edition of the Forum on European Culture
Due to the coronacrisis the Forum on European Culture - We the People, that is organised by De Balie and DutchCulture and that was supposed to take place in June this year, has been postponed until September 2020. However, we can still treat you to 4 podcastst from the latest edition in 2018, live from the Forum on European Culture that took place from May 31st until June 3rd.
The 2018 edition was called Act for Democracy and artists and thinkers took the stage to explore and recreate Europe through arts & culture. In these 4 podcasts, De Balie explored 4 main themes of the Forum that show what’s at stake at Europe and how we can... act for democracy. Two years old but still a very valid subject.
What does it mean to have Europe as a home? How inclusive is Europe? In this hour host Tim Wagemakers and co-host Yoeri Albrecht talk with Seyran Ates, a German lawyer and Muslim feminist. There's a talk with poet, spoken word artist and teacher Jacob Sam-La Rose, born in the UK, but with Guyanese roots. And one with Betul Ellialtiogly, photographer, graphic designer and architect from Turkey, who moved to the Netherlands in 2012. “This was supposed to be a love letter,” writes Jacob in one of his poems, “but it’s hard to love a place that could never take my true name in its mouth, a place I was born but always wondered whether I truly belonged.”
