Introduction
You are about to take an exciting new step in your career. As a cultural attaché, you will find yourself in a new country or at a new job, with new colleagues and languages around you, and we can imagine that you are curious about the new culture in which you will be working these coming years. You will also have to deal with the discipline of international cultural collaboration, and DutchCulture is here to help you find your way in that domain.
This guide explains how you, as a cultural attaché or cultural officer, can contribute to the successful implementation of the international cultural policies of the Netherlands. How can you prepare? What kind of information, tools and partners are available to you? What are the first steps you should take? What do you need to pay attention to? How can you make a difference? This guide answers these and other questions using the knowledge and experience of the professionals at DutchCulture, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and our many other partners.
This guide serves as a practical tool that is updated every year to ensure that the information it contains is as relevant to the current situation as possible. It also forms the starting point for your relationship with DutchCulture – because we are here for you. Whether you are just starting out or already have a good deal of experience, we are here to share our network, our information and our expertise with you. For specific questions and advice, you can contact us any time at focalcountriesdesk@dutchculture.nl.
We look forward to helping you promote international cultural collaboration in your (new) country. The future is full of wonderful opportunities – we wish you the best of luck!
DutchCulture
DutchCulture is the knowledge and network organisation for international cultural cooperation. We work for the cultural and creative sectors, public authorities, Dutch diplomatic missions and for other professionals with international ambitions. We are convinced that international cultural exchange can be a driving force for artistic and professional development, for stronger international relationships and for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. We envision a world in which international cultural cooperation and exchange enriches societies. We believe in the importance of collaboration and exchange based on reciprocity, inclusivity and sustainability. We provide information and advice to the cultural sector. We organise (online) events domestically and internationally, and we assist the Dutch government in the implementation of its international cultural policy.
