Mercury running: A report on the New Generations programme

In this new publication, we reflect on the journeys, challenges and successes of young makers in the DutchCulture New Generations programme.

In 2021, DutchCulture introduced NewGen – a thematic initiative aimed at fostering connections with young artists under 30 in the early stages of their careers. We wanted to explore ways in which they move across borders and refresh our view on international collaborations. Since the launch, we’ve embarked on a dynamic discovery of their artistic landscape through live meet-ups, articles, portraits and video series. Insights revealed that this generation of artists is digitally fluent, internationally oriented, outspoken and curious about the many layers of their identity. This three-year journey culminates in our most recent publication: Mercury Running.

This publication encapsulates the essence of fluidity within emerging artists. Inspired by Steve Lacy's eponymous track, we believe that we can measure the temperature of the artistic landscape by observing these makers as if using a thermometer. Flip through the publication and delve right into the stories of Dutch makers who completed international projects. You’ll gain valuable insights into their challenges, successes, and aspirations.

What's next?

As we reflect on the articles, programmes, and portraits created from 2021 to 2023, we are excited to share the impact of our efforts. Looking ahead, team NewGen is committed to evolving, adapting, and furthering its mission. Stay tuned for the next chapter as we continue to support emerging artists, fostering meaningful international cultural exchanges.
